Song of 108 Names of Bhairav - Bhairava Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram

about

Bhairav is the aspect or manifestation of Shiva so awesome and vastly mysterious as to terrifying. Bhairava is a also an aspect or Name of the Great Lord of Time, Mahakala. He is a fierce protector deity, the Ruler of Time or everything bound by time. And Mahakala Bhairava is the Gatekeeper to That which is Beyond all Time. (Transcendental Immortal Realization/Being beyond the limits of conceptual mind, and everything of this world which we know of that is under the influence of Time (subject to destruction or change)...

Bhairava is said to be an Immortal Siddha (perfected Being) while also being associated with taboos, dark aspects of life such as cremation grounds with ghosts and ghoulish creatures, drinking alcohol and blood, eating meat, etc. However as a Perfectly Divine Siddha, Bhairava is untouched and remains the same stainless Being regardless of all the duality of appearances. It is said that Bhairava wanders through the Himalayas and world his aspect as an Immortal Siddha on Earth even today.

In the scriptural stories of Ancient India Bhairava arises in his fierce aspect time and time again to defeat or destroy demons, evil forces, or arrogance. In other words putting out of balance elements back into harmony with great undefeatable force if necessary. Thus, Bhairava is a powerful and very helpful deity to approach for protection, purification, time mastery, and moving beyond time. This Divinity is a helper for all needs within the world of time, as well as to move beyond all perceptions and changeable phenomenal world to realize the very essence of Being.

This song (stotram) contains 108 Names of Divinity manifest as Bhairava. The Dhyana mantra at the beginning and mantra at the end are focusing on Batuka Bhairav, or the manifestation of Bhairava as a young boy. This is recommended approach because of the fiercely Awesome and sometimes terrifying aspect of Bhairav that should he respond to the call and appear he will be less likely to seem terrifying as a child. Also, just as a child is guileless, innocent, and easy to please, it is traditionally viewed by some tantric practitioners that the Deities such as Bhairava or Shakti will be easier to please and quick to grant boons in child form.
